This stuff is pretty amazing
This Dev Boot Camp phase0 journey is coming to an end. Tomorrow I'll be starting phase1 of Dev Bootcamp where I will begin an intensive immersive learning experience with my cohort members. I am extremely excited and nervous to start this new phase. I'm sure my cohort members feel the same way.
Even in the remote phase 0 I learned and dramatically extended my knowledge and point of view. Both technically and culturally I grew with my cohort while learning remotely yet connected constantly through messaging, video Google Hangouts and messaging.
On the technical side of the curriculum the 9 weeks started with setting up a development environment including: Sublime, RBenv, Ruby, Node, RSpec. We then moved on to introductory programming concepts and problem solving in Ruby. Ruby will be our main logic and problem solving medium through out on-site as well. We then moved on to HTML and CSS and learned the basics of front-end. Then we turned to JavaScript, trying to translate our knowledge of Ruby to guide us into problem solving using JavaScript. We learned about SQL and also DOM manipulation with JavaScript and JQuery.
On the cultural side I connected to my cohort. We first expressed our vulnerabilities and fears. We realized we are on this learning experience together and on a life journey to change our professional careers. We explored issues of our own thinking styles, giving and recieving feedback, stere-type threat and what we value, conflict and asking questions. All throughout phase 0 we pair programmed together and worked together to solve problems. I really feel connected to my cohort and feel like I can depend on them to help me through this curriculum.
On-site I will probably spend an average of 12 hours a day working with my cohort members and learning more each day. I am excited about this journey and I can't wait to begin. I know my cohort is a great bunch of people. We had the opportunity to hangout in San Francisco recently.
